By: MTVu.com ♣ December 2007
David Kennedy used to play guitar in Over My Dead Body, Hazen St and Box Car Racer. Now he shreds alongside blink-182 alum Tom DeLonge (also a former Box Car Racer) in epic rock outfit Angels & Airwaves. Their latest album, I-Empire, is pulverizing the charts with monster singles like "Everything's Magic" and "Breathe." But you obviously already know that. Otherwise you wouldn't have bothered with this here article, are we right? Well guess what. You made the right call. Because, among many other perks, when we strapped David Kennedy into The Hot Seat, he said f--- about 200 times. That NEVER happens around here. Reader, read on.
Tell us about your craziest touring experience.
In Florida, they have retaining ponds. I guess just because it rains so much. There are random stale disgusting pools of water everywhere... Anyway, so we're hanging around and getting a bit bored. This girl decides she wants some extra attention. We oblige her by challenging her to swim across this pond. She gets naked and jumps in...
She starts swimming through this cesspool. If that's not already bad enough, unbeknownst to us, this is the number one place for gators to hang out. Next thing you know, someone screams they see something move in the pond. She starts freaking out, but the pond is too big. She's trying to make it. She screams, and then disappears... We are freaking the f--- out, trying to get into the pond. I don't know if the commotion spooked the gator out, but she popped back up. We dragged her to the side and she was missing her right leg from the knee down... OMG how f---in' crazy is that!!! Just kidding about the gator. :)
What type of college class would you'd most want to take and why?
College is a waste of time. Sorry but that's just how how I feel...just get out and f---in rock!!!
What city in America is the most fun to visit and why?
Lawrence, Kansas... They have the best high school chicks... Have you ever been? You have got to go.
What's some of the best advice you were ever given?
Don't sit still if it gets stale or boring pick up and move on...
What's in heavy rotation in your MP3/CD player right now?
Tim Armstrong's A Poet's life.
The last good book you read or TV show you're addicted to.
Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (Tom Wolfe).
What's the first concert you ever saw - how was it?
The Dead Milkmen. f---in amazing!!! Changed my life. I was fourteen.
What are three items you can't live without on tour?
My band (that would just be weird without them), iPod (not because I listen to it, because it balances out the pocket my phone is in), number three... we should do a contest to see what people think it should be...
Who are your major musical influences?
Ritchie Valens for getting me to play the guitar, Gorilla Biscuits for motivating me to be a part of something, and U2 for teaching me the feeling of energy and passion outside of punk and hardcore.
Any random messages or tips you'd like to give to mtvU watchers?
mtvU is the best ever!!! Don't settle for less. They create the best award shows & parties, introduce you to new artists and support current artists... You can learn something from them. Always be current and advancing into the future, not just dwelling in the past... Good night and good luck, David
